Scanning Hardwood Lumber for Processing and Grading— What to do Now and Why
نویسندگان
چکیده
A cooperative effort between Virginia Tech, the USDA Forest Service, and the industry has led to the development of a new scanning technology to automatically detect lumber grading features that affect the value of the end product. This effort has resulted in several commercial scanning systems now available through Group Seven Systems and Nova Technologies. These systems include a color sorting system for hardwood edgeglued panel parts and an automatic lumber defect scanning system for hardwood rough mill applications. Current research and development efforts at Virginia Tech are now applying the scanning technology to automatic lumber grading and re-manufacturing. Current efforts are specifically aimed at automatically grading green rough hardwood lumber and grading/upgrading rough dry hardwood lumber. Substantial lumber value can be added with such automated systems through increased grading accuracy, custom grades, and optimum lumber upgrading opportunities.

What's Ahead in Automated Lumber Grading
This paper discusses how present scanning technologies are being applied to automatic lumber grading. The presentation focuses on 1) what sensing and scanning devices are needed to measure information for accurate grading feature detection, 2) the hardware and software needed to efficiently process this information, and 3) specific issues related to softwood lumber grading and hardwood lumber g...
متن کاملAn artificial neural network for real-time hardwood lumber grading
Computerized grading of hardwood lumber according to NHLA rules would permit fast assessment of sawn lumber and the evaluation of potential edging and trimming operations to improve lumber value. More importantly, to enable optimization of the hardwood lumber sawing process, a fast means of evaluating the potential value of boards before they are sawn is necessary. As log and lumber scanning sy...
متن کاملEnhancement of the computer lumber grading program to support polygonal defects
Computer grading of hardwood lumber promises to avoid regrading of the same lumber because of disagreements between the buyer and the seller. However, the first generation of computer programs for hardwood lumber grading simplify the process by modeling defects on the board as rectangles. This speeds up the grading process but can inadvertently put a board into a lower grade because rectangular...
متن کاملLUMBER GRADING Spatial WITH A COMPUTER
Over the past few years significant progress has been made in developing a computer vision system for locating and identifying defects on surfaced hardwood lumber. Unfortunately, until September of 1988 little research had gone into developing methods for analyzing rough lumber. This task is arguably more complex than the analysis of surfaced lumber. The prime motivation for developing such a s...
متن کاملMachine Vision Systems for Processing Hardwood Lumber and Logs
Machine vision and automated processing systems are under development at Virginia Tech University with support and cooperation from the USDA Forest Service. Our goals are to help U.S. hardwood producers automate, reduce costs, increase product volume and value recovery, and market higher value, more accurately graded and described products. Any vision system is composed of two bread tasks: imag...
